I would like to believe in that the majority of Americans are more intelligent than these individuals. But then again, it seems that the majority of Americans are watching Fox "News" instead of searching for objective media outlets and applying some measure of critical, intellectual evaluation as to how they inform themselves. What concerns me is the decline of media literacy, mostly from the boomers to the millenial generation, and the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and effectively communicate with the end goal of becoming informed and responsible citizens. We live in an era surrounded by media that bombards us with messages through text, images and sound. But simply being surrounded by media does not necessarily mean we recognize or understand its content or intent. Specifically:
- media is a construction
- media representations construct reality
- media has commercial purposes
- the audience is the one who negotiates meaning
- media is laced with values and ideology
- media messages may have social consequences and/or effects
